TheGuwahatibuzz | OCTOBER 30, 2020  6:40 hrs GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in its bid to keep the city clean more effectively and efficiently has launched a software on “Public Feedback regarding Garbage Collection of NGOs”. The software was launched by Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya. The public can visit the link https://gmcassam.in/feedback/ to place their feedback on NGO’s regular garbage collection for smooth monitoring of Garbage Collection. Based on public feedback, an inquiry will be done. In the meantime, six (6) nos of contracts of NGO’s have already been terminated by the GMC on the basis of public feedback on their performances.

Assam CM asks Education Department to Distribute Smartphones amongst Students of Poor Families.

GUWAHATI: The Education Department of Assam was asked to provide smartphones to the students of economically weaker families by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while attending a meeting with officials of the department, alongside health officials on 27th October.  Smartphones are to be provided so that students of poor families are not left out of the classes being conducted online.  The meeting was held to discuss the reopening of schools after months of lockdown. The Chief Minister also advised for the distribution of iron and folic acid tablets, and yoga classes for boosting immunity to the students.  While the COVID care centers that were being set up at the schools were asked to be shifted immediately, Sonowal also advised that each school be linked with one health centre for a regular check-up of students.  Schools in Assam are to reopen on 2nd November maintaining strict COVID protocols.

Within Minutes of Inauguration, Guwahati Residents Stain Ganeshguri Flyover Red

GUWAHATI: Within minutes of inauguration of the Ganeshguri flyover in Guwahati red stains were found in the entry section of the new bridge extension from the Zoo Road side. The stains were discovered at the same time when Assam Chief Minister (CM) Sarbananda Sonowal was at the flyover. Locals alleged that the stains were there even before the entry of CM in the flyover.  "We want CCTV camera in the flyover as people will continue to spit," said a resident, who came to attend the inauguration.  Meanwhile, a Traffic Police on duty responded by saying, "How will we stop them when they are running?" A worker of Gautam Construction (builder of the flyover) expressed his disappointment upon seeing the stains. Guwahati: Row at Narengi Chicken Market over Illegal Beef Sale.

GUWAHATI: The locals of Narengi charged a seller of a market near the railway station of selling beef. The meat was being allegedly sold illegally in a chicken shop. In the chaos, the shop owner managed to escape. However, the supplier was caught. The meat was reportedly transported from Hajo and sold in packets to people who came to buy it. The Officer in Charge of Noonmati Police Station, Pabitra Bhuyan, confirmed the incident. "We intervened in the situation upon coming to know about it. The sellers are saying they only brought it today but the locals have alleged that they have been doing it for some time,” said Bhuyan. The police are investigating the matter.

Durga Puja 2020: Traffic Restrictions Imposed in Guwahati.

The Guwahati Traffic Police has issued new guidelines to be followed for the movement of vehicles in the city during the four days of Durga Puja, starting 22nd October to 26th October. Here are the detailed guidelines: RESTRICTIONS ON MOVEMENT OF GOODS CARRYING VEHICLES: A. Goods carrying vehicles (heavy, medium and mini trucks) shall NOT be allowed to enter the city from 1:00 PM to 4.00 AM (1300 hours 0400 hours next day) from Jalukbari. Garchuk, Lokhara, Beltola, Hatigaon, Khanapara and Chandmari side. B. The goods carrying heavy trucks will be allowed to enter the city from 4:00 AM (0400 hours) onwards (subject to NO obstruction on the road due to puja) up to 07.00AM (0700 hours) only in the morning. India's First Multi-Modal Logistics Park to Come Up in Assam.

GUWAHATI: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will lay the foundation stone for India's first multi-modal logistics park in Assam today. The multi-modal logistics park will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 694 crore. "Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari will virtually lay the foundation stone for the first-ever multi-modal logistic park in Assam tomorrow," the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in the statement on Monday. The multi-modal logistic park will be developed under the ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojna with the aim to provide direct connectivity through air, road, rail and waterways to the people. The event will be presided over by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and will be attended by Union Ministers Jitendra Singh, V K Singh and officials from the Centre and state.  

Guwahati: Ganeshguri Flyover To Be Inaugurated On October 22

GUWAHATI: The Ganeshguri Flyover in Guwahati will be inaugurated on October 22, said Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday.  The Public Works Department (PWD), health and education minister of Assam said that the flyover will be opened for the public from the day of Sasthi Puja during Durga Puja. The 476-meter flyover is being built under State-Own Priority Scheme-General with a financial outlay of Rs 58.76 crore. We are currently giving final touches to the Ganeshguri flyover and it will be inaugurated on October 22," sources at the PWD informed G Plus. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, PWD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and cabinet minister of law and justice Siddhartha Bhattacharya are expected to be present during the occasion. 

Guwahatis 200 year old Durga puja..

Guwahati currently hosts around 500 Durga Pujas. But do you know which one is the oldest? The Uzanbazar Barowari Puja. The present puja is 131 years old, but its origin dates back to 1821.  It was established by Rajkumar Ghanakanta Singha of the Uzanbazar Rajbari. Due to the prevailing social unrest of the times, it was first performed in 1821, probably under the guidance of Ahom King, Swargadeo  Chandrakanta Singha. This private puja of the Ahom royal family continued till 1888. History records that due to the depleting resources in the Rajbari's treasury, which by then was mostly dependent on British pension, it became difficult to continue with the private celebrations. Ghanakanta Singha's daughter-in-law, Mahindri Aideo, the widow of Keshavkanta decided to make the Durga puja public.  But it was done so by Chandradhar Sarma only after her demise. "This year there's nothing, not even 20% compared to last year. Puja is just 8 days to go and still there are no people in market,” said a dejected shirt seller at Annapura Plaza in Guwahati's Fancy Bazar market. He along with the other shirt retailers of the complex had to bear zero economic activity in the lockdown months. "We had to bear heavy losses for 5 months and had to let go of our staff," said the owner, who requested not to be named.  With the relaxed reopening, the shopkeepers had come to terms with the COVID-19 induced lockdown. They were hoping for better days towards the festive end of the year. "We had hopes of making profits during the Puja. Educational Institutes Across Assam to Reopen from November 2.

GUWAHATI: Educational institutes across Assam will reopen from November 2 onwards, stated education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference on October 17. "Students of classes 6 onwards will resume physical classes. Classes will be held in two sessions - 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM," Sarma said, adding that there will be no mandate to attend the classes as attendance won't be taken in schools and online classes will continue.&nb sp; While physical classes for students in primary school till class 5 will remain suspended, such students may visit school for informal academic exchange and mid-day-meal. The decision to resume classes for students of class 1 to 5 will be taken in December, Sarma stated.  While addressing reporters, minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the SOPs for resuming classes for students, barring the primary level, would be in sync with the established COVID protocols. 22% of Assam’s New COVID-19 Cases Detected from Kamrup Metro.

GUWAHATI: Assam recorded 767 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday, October 16.  G Plus spoke to Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who revealed that out of the 767 cases, 174 are from Kamrup (Metro) district. The cases were detected from all across the state, out of 34,714 COVID tests conducted. This was informed by the Himanta Biswa Sarma via social media post. Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Sarma wrote, "767 cases detected out of 34,714 tests with positivity rate of 2.21%. 931 patients discharged."  With 931 patients discharged from various hospitals within the last 24 hours, active cases in Assam stands at 28,630 while 1,99,749 persons have been cured of the virus.  The COVID-19 death toll in Assam stands at 853.

  GUWAHATI: In a fresh set of guidelines issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the Government of Assam has opened up more activities outside Containment Zones. However, strict enforcement of lockdown in Containment Zones remains in place till 31st October 2020.  Social / academic / sports / entertainment / cultural / religious / political functions and other congregations have already been permitted with a ceiling of 100 persons outside Containment Zones only.Such gatherings beyond the limit of 100 persons may be permitted outside Containment Zones by State Government only after 15th November, 2020 and subject to conditions. Educational institutions will open in a graded manner, as directed by the government of India.   GUWAHATI: The BJP-led government in Assam has decided to crack down on the “emerging trend” of “marriages by deception”, usually involving a prospective groom lying about his religion to marry a Hindu girl, finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday. “In Assam, we are seeing the emergence of two to three new trends. Many Muslim boys create fake Facebook accounts with Hindu names and post pictures of themselves at temples. A girl gets married to one such boy, only to discover later that he is not from the same religion. This is a not a bona fide marriage – it is based on false information and basically amounts to a breach of trust,” Sarma said.
